Graphing Calculator
Algebra 2 students NEED access to graphing calculators in order be successful in this class. In particular, Ralston Valley uses the TI-NSpire. There are two different TI-NSpire's out there: the CX (on the left) and the CX CAS (on the right).
The CAS stands for "Computer Algebra System". Okay, listen up because this is super important. IF you plan to take AP Calculus, you NEED the CAS option. I can't say what your college Calculus professors will require. It's best for me not to even venture a guess. If you're not planning on taking Calculus here at Ralston Valley, the non-CAS should be just fine. If you would like to purchase them online, feel free. The math department sells the CAS version for $140 (no tax). Talk to Ms. Cerrone.
If you ever find yourself at home without a graphing calculator, there are some spectacular free options online. Check out Desmos or Geogebra. Even with these wonderful options out there for us to use, we still need a graphing calculator to take standardized tests (here's looking at you SAT *uncomfortably long pause*). Those tests do not allow the use of calculator programs on computers or phones or iPod/iPad-type devices. The money you spend on a good calculator is well worth not having to get a tutor AND the increased score on the tests .
